Dealing With Moisture And Mold In Storages

We all do it. We save little mementos and souvenirs from vacations, from places we’ve visited, and even from high school. Those things can be furniture, yearbooks, pictures, letters, sports equipment, tools, a shot glass from your vacation in Las Vegas, or even a dress or shirt worn in high school that does not even fit anymore! Chances are, if you’ve bought something new that replaces your old item, that old item will end up at the local Goodwill or worse, in your garage or in a storage building.

Face it. We all have a little bit of packrat behavior in us. For a long time, I still had decorations from my 8th grade graduation dance stored in a big plastic container. These items consisted of a few popped balloons, a silver star with my name on it, and the invitation to the dance itself. It was not important that I keep it in my home. It served absolutely no purpose. But it was part of my childhood, and I wanted to keep it for memories.

I had to do what I knew I needed to do. I went through all of my belongings that had been locked away into storage containers and threw out every single thing that I did not need. Throwing some of these things out was difficult, but what’s more important is that I had memories from that specific event. For those who cannot throw these souvenirs away, these items will find a home in a storage building. Signing the papers to your portable garage is easy, but keeping your belongings clean and free from rodents and mold is another issue.

One of the very first things you need to ask is if the building is waterproof. The building that your storage unit is housed must be waterproof. Excessive moisture build up and rain that seeps in from underneath the door can wreak havoc on your belongings, particularly your furniture, clothing, and books, or anything that is made of a natural material.

The best and only thing you can do to protect your belongings is to seal them properly. Do not throw your items in the storage and expect them to be in good standing when you check on them next time. Make sure all smaller items, such as clothing, books, and souvenirs are kept in plastic bins that lock all moisture out. Furniture should be placed in giant plastic bags and the ends tied tightly to keep moisture from penetrating the bag.

Musty Odors Could Mean Mold

The majority of us worry about how clean our home looks on the inside and the outside. We can spend hours every week cleaning this and that, straightening things up and organizing to keep down the clutter that can over take a busy home so easily if it is let go for very long. If we are not able to keep up with all of the homework ourselves, some of us who can afford it, hire someone to come in and help.

Having a home that looks spotlessly clean and organized is a wonderful feeling, but the affect can be completely ruined if the home has a particularly bad smelling odor that you just can not seem to track down. This can sometimes happen all too easily when you have kids and pets in the home. Try as you might to dispel them, you will more than likely have occasional unpleasant odors. The family pets have accidents and almost any kid will hide a peanut butter sandwich under the sofa when he does not want to finish it. You always find these lovely items eventually because of the smell.

Taking out the garbage on a regular basis is done to prevent smells in the home as well. The source of most home odors can be tracked down and disposed off easily enough. If you have a distinct musty odor that you have begun to notice, this might be something more serious than a pet accident or hidden food item. The odor that you smell because of mold is something you never want to have in your home. Mold is a serious issue and not because of the smell.

In recent years mold has been found to be one of the leading causes of allergies in the home. It can cause terrible problems for some people who are sensitive and for those with compromised immune systems. It can cause breathing difficulties in children, adults, and your pets. Mold spores can travel through the air and be easily breathed into the body. One of the tell tale signs of mold is the smell it gives off. It is unmistakable because it really does not smell like anything else.

One place in the home that is famous for having that moldy, musty, smell is a basement. Mold often grows in a basement because there is moisture in the air down there or even worse, water is coming into the basement from the outside or from a leak in the pipes. Basements that have an earthy, mold smell need to be inspected to find where the water or moisture is originating from. It should be corrected. You might even need to hire a water damage professional to come in resolve the issue for you. Your insurance should cover the cost for this. Other plumbing in the home should be inspected regularly to help prevent mold as well.
